Big Gulp

Will SmileOn Saturday I had just finished lunch and went to make a phone call, only to hear the sound of liquid and ice cubes cascading off the kitchen table onto the floor. That sound was followed by another sound from Jim in the form of “God dammit.”

As Jim and the boys were finishing lunch, Jim knocked over his large Coke that he just purchased while out getting lunch. It spilled all over the table and floor and we quickly went about cleaning up the big mess.

The boys watched us in shock since they are the ones usually doing the spilling. Jim was a bit upset as he was really looking forward to his drink.

It was then that Will very sweetly turned to Jim and said “Daddy, I am sorry you spilled your God dammit drink.”

It took everything I had to not spit my drink all over. I couldn’t stop giggling. As a part of his second grade curriculum, we have been working hard with Jack on how to use adjectives to describe words in more detail. Will has obviously been paying close attention. Hilarious.

Photo Friday

Photo Friday – Will “sings” the hits

will singing.jpg

Instead of singing the words to songs Will has taken to lip-syncing. It is hystarical; several times I have almost driven off the road watching him in the rearview mirror. One of his favorites is We Are Young by Fun. I finally was able to capture it on video. He also does part of Katy Perry’s Part of Me on it too. “Happy singing.”

Update – for some reason YouTube has blocked my video. I apologize for the mix-up and will try to repost when we get it figured out. Thanks for your patience.

Splat Goes the Lasagna

Last Sunday evening the boys and I were having dinner. Jim left that morning for the week of business traveling, so it was just the kids and I. When Jim is out of town our dinners get a bit simpler, like that night’s leftover lasagna.

Poor Will had a cold, so he was very sniffily, tired and hadn’t eaten much all day. I wanted to make sure to get something other than fruit and goldfish into is tummy. Jack finished up his dinner and headed to do his chore of feeding the dog before he got his dessert. This usually prods Will along to finish up eating his dinner so he can get his “zert” as well.

During the meal I had helped him make up a few bites on his fork since he was having difficulty getting the noodles to stay on it. To help get him finished I put his last bite on his fork. In true Will style he waved his fork around enough that the lasagna slipped off onto his chair.

Now I was getting frustrated with him, as happens quite often, so I made up another bite which was a bit bigger than the last. After a bunch of threats (if you don’t eat this bite, then there will not be any dessert), he finally put the bite in his mouth. And almost immediately he started to gag. I guess the bite was too big.

He tried to keep eating it, but once he start to gag it usually doesn’t end well. And this was no exception. Before I knew it the entire unchewed bite of lasagna flies out of his mouth and lands on the floor about two feet away with a big SPLAT. I never knew lasagna would sound like that hitting the floor.

Part of me was mad at him for being stubborn and the other part wanted to crack-up because it was like a cartoon. I managed to keep my composure and put a smaller bite on his fork that he eventually did eat. Mulligan did me a favor and cleaned up Will’s projectile noodles, while Will got upset that she was eating his food. Well that will teach you kid, keep your food in your own mouth.

Love Stories

As anyone who knows me will say I am a sucker for a good love story, especially romantic comedies. Since the theme for this week’s Monday Listicles is love I figured I would share. So grab your favorite romantic comedy and curl up with someone you love this Valentine’s Day and enjoy.

1. Up – While technically this isn’t a rom-com, it has one of the most beautifully told love stories put on film.

2. Notting Hill – My favorite love story line comes from this clip. “I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.” Plus I love the montage at the end of the movie.

3. Love Actually – So many love stories all in one movie, they are so wonderfully woven together into one of the best holiday movies ever.

4. Pretty Woman – How can you get a better one than this? I was in high school and probably saw this movie in the theater five times.

5. Sliding Doors – Another movie on the fringe of being a rom-com, but there is a strong fate element that runs through this favorite. Doesn’t fate always lead to love in the movies?

6. The Wedding Date – You gotta love a wedding and an insanely hot guy. Yum!

7. You’ve Got Mail – A classic about how life will lead you to love if you give it a chance.

8. Sweet Home Alabama – With Reese and more hot guys, I can watch this one anytime.

9. Can’t Buy Me Love – My sister and I used to watch this one over and over again. The last scene on the lawn mower takes the cake for final scenes.

10. Sabrina – I am reminded of how much I love Paris and how much I grew up on my short visit there. Plus it has Harrison Ford and he was on my laminated list, until he got bumped for a Ryan.

If You Give a Mom…

This post is based on the children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff and is one of Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop prompts this week. Children’s books can tell great life lessons and can still be relevant for adults.

If you give a Mom a lawn chair, then she is going to want a drink.

When she goes inside to make a drink (which may or may not be a cocktail), one of her kids will ask her for a snack.

Looking through the cabinet for snacks will remind her that they are supposed to bring snack to the soccer game in the morning.

So she will look for her phone to text her husband to buy snacks on the way home. While she is texting her husband she notices a missing library book under a bunch of papers.

She goes to put the library book in her son’s backpack only to find shoes and jackets on the floor.

Once she puts them away she notices dirt on the floor.

While she is cleaning up the dirt, the phone rings. It is her husband asking what kind of snacks to buy.

During their conversation she realizes that she is thirsty.

As she goes to make her drink she remembers that they are out of ice because the ice maker isn’t working.

When she picks up the phone to call her neighbor to borrow ice, she realizes that she is supposed to be sitting in the sun in a lawn chair with that neighbor.

Mama’s Losin’ It

Crazy Hair Day

This week is Spirit Week at school leading up to the big Halloween Bash and Walk-A-Thon on Friday. Monday was inside out and backwards day; Jack wanted to wear his pants backwards, but I convinced him it made going potty difficult and inside out would be good enough. Tuesday was sports day and he wore his San Jose Sharks jersey.

Today was crazy hair day and he decided he wanted it to be purple and gold with a big W. He even wanted a small W on his forehead, but that was to hard to fit it in. Maybe next year. This is some good Husky spirit, hopefully it will bring the team some good mojo this weekend.

Guilty Pleasures

We all have those things that we love deep down in our hearts but are somewhat embarrassed to admit in public. The Monday Listicles at Northwest Mommy is all about confessing our guilty pleasures. Here are some of mine.

1. Naptime – I love naptime, not for me, but the boys. From 1-3 p.m. every day I have time to myself with no one asking me for a snack or needing a toy put back together. Most of the time I work (like right now), but periodically I watch a movie or do my nails.

2. TV – We probably have the TV on too much in our house, but a two year old is just not a great conversationalist. It also allows me to catch up on the shows that I like but Jim doesn’t.

3. French Fries – I am not sure what it is about French fries, but they are so good. Some are definitely better than others, but you can’t go wrong with a potato strips cooked in hot oil.

4. Reality TV – I know this was probably called out above, but since I was confessing I felt the need to be more specific. As Jim says “There is nothing better than watching stupid people be stupid on TV.” Yes I (we, Jim loves them too) watch Bachelor Pad, Survivor, Amazing Race and Big Brother. Those are the ones I am willing to admit to in writing.

5. Uncle John’s Margaritas – Anyone who has been to my aunt and uncle’s lake house and had one of his fancy margaritas will agree they are just awesome. Even Jim likes them and he will not normally drink tequila. John makes them in big tumbler cups and then we either sit on the dock or go for a boat ride. Nothing says summer like Uncle John’s Margaritas.

6. Eggnog Lattes – Jim and I count down the days until Starbucks has eggnog lattes for the holidays. I am not sure why this combo is so good, but it is. I have tried to recreate them at home, but they just aren’t the same.

7. Red Wine and S’mores by a Campfire – There is nothing better than sitting around the campfire (especially after Will goes to bed, noting a theme) and enjoying some good red wine, yummy smores and great friends.

8. Cheesecake – I love good cheesecake. Thank goodness I don’t eat it very often because I would weigh 300 pounds. It is so creamy and rich, especially pumpkin or s’mores.

9. Vests – I think I get this one from my Dad. They are so comfortable and give you just enough warmth. I have knit ones, fleece ones, down ones and I wear them all.

10. Pedicures – I have a hard time looking down at naked toe nails. I have no idea why, but it makes me happy to see brightly painted nails when I get out of the shower. Most of the time I just do them myself, but periodically it is such a nice indulgence to be able to go and have them done.

What are your guilty pleasures? Are there some that you aren’t willing to admit even to strangers?
