A Mompreneur’s Chronicle Of Life With Her Boys

Mid-winter Break

Last week we spent Jack’s mid-winter break in California with all the family down there. The weather was anything but winter as a few days topped 70 degrees and not a drop of rain.

This is a school break that I don’t quite understand. Although it is nice to have the time to go on ski trips, it would be nicer to have just a long weekend (like have Thursday, Friday and Monday off) and then get out earlier in June. Compounding the already long school year is an added week of snow days in January so now we are in school until June 20th. But that is another post.

The boys had fun playing outside, riding bikes and shooting hoops. We even got a nice visit from Grandma, Grandfather and Auntie Jean who drove over from the Bay Area for the day. It was nice to soak up some vitamin D with all the sunshine, even though the vineyards need rain.

It was so cute to watch Jack with Baby Finn. He loves to sit and talk to him and make him smile. Finley is trying so hard to laugh, but it just comes out as a squeak. Jack thinks that is so funny and calls him the squeaker.

Although we all are happy to be home in our own beds and be reunited with Jim and Mulligan, we will miss everyone. The dog was so happy to see us she practically turned herself inside out when we got home. But then again, she also does that when I return home from the grocery store.

How did you spend your mid-winter break, if you got one?

Photo Friday – Cousins

This week we are in California for Jack’s mid-winter break. It has been fun to see the cousins together. Jack loves talking with Finley and making him laugh. Just wait a few years and we will never be able to get them all to sit still for a photo like this.

Pedal Pusher

It is so hard to teach a child to ride a trike or bike, pushing the pedals. The process is very counterintuitive, having to push with alternating feet. I will contend that this is up there with potty training on some of the most difficult things to teach your children.
When Jack was learning to ride a trike I tried different methods to get him to understand the concept of pushing the pedals. I would walk in front of him and push on his toes. I would tell him, push right then left. I would push on his knees. I am not sure what finally worked, but he did learn.
My nephew Oliver preferred to not use the pedals on the trike and just walk his feet on the ground. He got so good at it he was really fast. As a result, his shins were always badly bruised from banging into the pedals; we used to cringe just watching him. Now he is riding a small bike with training wheels.
It is time to start teaching Will to pedal. He had great success with his balance bike last year, which we hope will help him become comfortable balancing on two wheels eventually. Our thought was to have Will skip the trike phase all together and jump right onto Jack’s old bike with training wheels. We don’t have Jack’s trike anymore (we didn’t like it anyway) and feel like it would be a waste to buy one for a few months of transition.
So how did you teach your child how to pedal without breaking your back. Does anyone have a good techniques?

Photo Friday – Hundred Day Old Man

Wednesday was the 100th day of school and the 1st graders decided to dress up like they are a 100 years old. He asked for the grey hair and mustache. This was the first time he has ever requested to wear a collared shirt, but promptly changed his clothes as soon as he was home. He is so cute, I wish he would wear something like this more often.

Memories Captured

I am taking part in a special monthly series called Memories Captured hosted by Mama Wants This and These Little Waves. It is fun to play with a photo and add the words. Enjoy the boys on Valentine’s Day with their chocit (as Will would say) lips.

Photo Friday – B-ball Play’a

Jack is playing basketball for the first time this winter. He really likes it, but is still getting the skills down. Basketball isn’t either Jim’s or my sport of choice so we are lucky he has a great coach. Go Thunderblades! (The kids came up with the team name).

Photo Friday – Bedtime Buddies

Jack loves his stuffed animals. Red and Piggy (from Angry Birds) and Mickey have the cherished positions in his bed while the others are on top of the cab of his bed. He would have them all in his bed if I let him. There is nothing like your bedtime buddies.

Sweetest Boy

I have the sweetest son. Jack has always had a big heart, but he has really shown it over the last few days.

Saturday night Jim and I went out to dinner with friends, so the boys had a babysitter. They hadn’t seen Megan, the babysitter, for a while. While I was getting ready to go, he came in and showed me several notes he had written for her. When we arrived at dinner I noticed the note below in my purse from him. Jim and Will got notes too. He wanted to make sure that we all knew that he loved us. How cute is that?

Early Sunday morning I woke up to a raging sore throat and felt awful. Needless to say, I spent most of Sunday on the sofa. Again, Jack made a personal note for me as he was concerned and hoped it would make me feel better. It certainly raised my spirits but unfortunately couldn’t raise rid me of my illness.

Monday I found out it was strep throat (thanks Oliver) and I started to feel a bit better with the help of antibiotics. Jack told Jim he wanted to make breakfast in bed for me, because “that makes moms feel better, like it does on Mother’s Day.” So this morning I didn’t get full breakfast, but I got orange juice and tea (the best Jim could do on short notice). He wanted to bring flowers too, but since we still have snow in our flower beds, there were no flowers to be found. So instead, I received in a vase a dry sprig from our Christmas wreath that is still hanging on the front of the house. What a good way to wake up.

Jack is truly unique and his sensitivity and care for others is such a blessing. I hope these traits will remain with him forever. His wife and kids will love him for it, as do the rest of us.

Photo Friday – Happy 7th Birthday Jack

Jack’s 7th birthday was Tuesday. I can’t believe my little boy is growing up so fast. We had cupcakes with friends on Monday night during the Rose Bowl get together. He chose dinner of Five Guys Burgers on Tuesday. Good choice Jack!

Photo Friday – Best Husky Fan

Last night our beloved Washington Huskies played in the Alamo Bowl versus the Baylor Bears and the Heisman trophy winner. Unfortunately the Huskies didn’t come out on top of the crazy offensive display of 123 total points. We tried to channel all the mojo we could to the team including people sitting in specific spots. Jack did his part as the best Husky fan, but shed a couple of tears at the end of the night due to being over tired and the loss. We are still very proud of our boys making it to bowl games in back to back years. Go Dawgs!
