A Mompreneur’s Chronicle Of Life With Her Boys

Halloween Marathon

For us Halloween is a marathon, not a sprint. That isn’t to say it is bad; it is just long, stretching over days or weeks if you count all the preparation.

It all starts months in advance when the boys decide what they want to be for Halloween. I have a sickness that prevents me from buying pre-made costumes (I know, but at least I acknowledge it.) This year Jack decided he wanted to be Sam Flynn, the main character in the movie, Tron Legacy. Since Will doesn’t have an opinion yet, the plan was for him to be either the character, Tron, or Rinzler. I was going to try to make Jim and I costumes too, but that idea got thrown out due to lack of time.

Jack’s costume came together well and I even found some glow in the dark Frisbees that look like the disks. However, Will’s was just too plain. After I saw it together on Friday I knew he needed something different.

Last Friday (like last year) we chaired the haunted maze for the Halloween Bash at Jack’s elementary school. Since we did so much of the building work last year it made sense to take it on again. We were able to add more black lights and decorations to fill the space of the maze better, including a second coffin, jail, mummy man and zombie. We were able to get some photos from inside the maze this year, thanks Jerry Ann from Deddo Arts.

Since we build the maze in the gym, we have to build and decorate it on the morning of the event, then take it down that night. Luckily we had amazing crews of people throughout the day to help us, including Alan and Dennis who were there all day (they were rewarded with beers afterward.)

The Halloween Bash followed a walk-a-thon. Unfortunately the weather gods were not smiling on us and it poured rain, prematurely ending that part as people headed inside to get out of the garden hose that was coming out of the sky. I think everyone still had fun at the 2nd annual Halloween Bash.

Saturday morning I decided to make Will a skeleton (“skelskin” as Will says) costume. Yes, two days before Halloween. It actually came together well and he was happy with it.

Sunday night we carved our eight pumpkins with Allison, Dennis and their kids; well technically Dennis, Jim and I carved pumpkins while Allison cooked and the kids played. Next year Jack is going to help with his pumpkin. It is a memory I want him to have like I do.

Then Monday arrives… Halloween on a weeknight is hard. It feels like such a race to get through everything, get the kids in bed at a reasonable time and remember to enjoy the night. The teachers were great and didn’t give homework. We trick or treated through the neighborhood in a group of 11 kids and eight adults with cocktails. The bigger kids quickly moved from house to house, while Will took his time. He just moves to his own beat and does what he wants. By the end of the night he would just ring the doorbell and say “I get candy now,” instead of trick or treat. We will work on his manners.

We survived our Halloween marathon and may even sign up to do it all again next year. As Jim likes to say, “we are on a year-to-year contract renewal and next year we qualify for free agency.”

My 10 Favorite Carved Pumpkins

I scoured my photo archives and the deep dark recesses of my brain to find my favorite ten of our carved pumpkins. I love carving pumpkins. We actually had eight (yes eight) to carve this year. I did five of them. As a kid we used to have pumpkin carving parties and some of my parents friends would come over. I always remember how creative everyone was, especially Bob Bishofberger.

Without further ado here are my favorites.

Photo Friday – Zombies

One of the new props for the Haunted Maze at Jack’s school is this zombie (or zobee as Jack says) that Jim and our friend Dennis made. He has been standing in our living room waiting for the last week and is really creepy to see out of the corner of your eye in the middle of the night. I think the boys make pretty good zombies too.

Finding the Time …

I am having trouble finding the time. There just isn’t enough time in one day or one week to get it all done. How can I fit it all in?

I am having trouble finding the time to make Jim’s and my Halloween costumes. I just broke it to Jack that if we dressed up we will not match him and Will. His sweet response was “Then what will you be?” I said “I am not sure bud, it depends on the time.”

I need to make decorations, lists, reports, brownies and costumes (maybe more, but I can’t remember) for the Haunted Maze for this year’s elementary school fundraiser. I have a list so long that I haven’t even found the time to make the actual list, and I am not sure how it will all get done in the time we have left.

Where did the time go to take some fall photos of the boys? I wanted to participate in a fall photo link-up, but so far I don’t have the photos to match each week’s themes.

I am having trouble finding the time to make and return phone calls. I am sorry if you are on that list; I promise I will get to you and I am thinking of you.

Ditto with emails. You would think that I would be better with a smart phone, but I am not. I read the emails and if the reply is more than a couple sentences I decide to wait to do it from my computer and then they get lost. Molly, the book list is coming. I promise.

How do I find the time to watermark and migrate all of my old blog photos to Flickr and then link the photos on the site? This one is so overwhelming that I don’t even know where to start.

I am having trouble finding the time to fit in a family fun night for the October Badges of Fun project for FamilyFun magazine. Friday night soccer and Saturday night football are really getting in the way. Maybe we will end up with a Sunday night movie or something else.

When can I fit in researching the new storage server for our growing library of digital media? Our other one is getting full and I am afraid every time I add files that I am going to get an error saying that we have reach its capacity. It is time to upgrade and I think I know what I want, but since it is such a big purchase I need to be sure.

These are only some of the things floating around in my mind that I can’t find the time to do. And we haven’t even reached the holidays yet.

How do you find the time? How do you prioritize your to-do list?

Haunted House-A-Thon

altAs promised here is the post about the Haunted Castle for Jack’s school Halloween-A-Thon on the Friday before Halloween. A little back info.

The school Jack is going to is brand new, therefore the PTA and all of the programs are also new. Right after school started we volunteered to help with the Halloween party, which was going to be the big fundraiser for the year. (Side note – our school is following the new district policy of no parties, so the kids weren’t going to get to celebrate Halloween, so instead of the standard Walk-A-Thon, we thought it would be fun entry doorwayto have a Halloween-A-Thon.) Since the PTA is new and has a lack of volunteers we quickly became the chair people for the Haunted Castle maze.

Now we needed to come up with the design, build it off site, transport it to the school on the morning of the event, set up and take down that night, which provided some interesting challenges. After some thought and research Jim came up with the structure design. It would be 2×2 frames covered with black plastic. The inside would be a maze of hallways to keep people walking though it and we would have to put a roof on it to make it dark. Luckily we were able to get some great sponsors and got all of the building materials donated.

putting the roof onThe structure turned out to be 8 ft tall, 26 ft wide and 40 ft long. It was my job to light and decorate it. That is no easy task since I didn’t get to see it built until the day of. We settled on black lights for the lighting. Once the walls were covered with plastic we painted patterns on the walls with florescent spray paint. Our neighbors Tom and Diana and Jim and I spent a rainy Sunday in our garage getting high on spray paint fumes.

altAn interesting thing I discovered was that not all white things glow under a black light. White plastic and white paint don’t glow. Luckily I found some glow in the dark paint which worked to coat the things that don’t naturally glow. I found some great stuff, like a spider with LED eyes, a ghost that flies on a line, and spooky talking pumpkin. We made grave stones, a big white spider web and a coffin.

Set-up on Friday went very smoothly. We were able to drive right up to the gym and unload in between recesses. Our volunteers were great and we had the walls built in a couple hours and the roof on by lunch. Then the decorating got to work. Unfortunately we don’t have many good photos of the inside because it was so dark.

front sideWe were hopeful that it would come together and stay up the whole time and it did, plus it looked amazing. It was hard to visualize it and I think it exceeded both of our expectations. Anyone who knew we did it found us during the event and let us know how much they liked it. The kids liked it too. There are a few things we will add and do differently next year, but it was a great start for the first year.

Back sideThe take down was done within 45 minutes. Amazing!

At 7:30 that night we were collapsed on the sofa having a beer and munching on some snacks.  We had been on our feet from 6 am until 7:30, we were a touch sore the next day.

A big thank you to Alan (Jack’s god father), who was our right hand guy that day. He helped Jim load, unload, build, decorate, host, chaperone, take down and haul home. We did give him a couple of beers as we finally sat down.

May the Halloween force be with you

jack pumpkinI know many of you have been waiting with breathless anticipation to find out what our Halloween theme was this year. Well you will have to wait until later in the post.

Our Halloween was a touch on the busy side this year. Jim and I were the chair people for the haunted castle at the Halloween-A-Thon at Jack’s school. It was a big event that was held last Friday afternoon and included a silent auction, concessions, bouncy houses, crafts and trick or treating. (I will make a separate will pumpkinpost on this soon, because what we were able to do was amazing if I do say so myself.) However, that (and the acquisition of Jim’s company, yes he still has a job, thank goodness) kept us so busy that we didn’t get to carve our pumpkins until Saturday morning.

On Saturday morning we got the garage all set-up for the big event and set to work. Five hours and five pumpkins later I was finished, Jim did 2 of them. (I took a break for lunch and to put kids down for naps.) Jack did work on part of his, but got tired so I ended up doing the rest. He did do a great job of cleaning out his and another pumpkin. Will liked taking the seeds out of the pumpkin and then putting them back in and then throwing them.

So finally the Halloween theme….

luke Jack decided months ago that he wanted to be Luke Skywalker, but not just any Luke Skywalker, he wanted to be the one from Return of the Jedi in all black with the green light saber. Not that I would have purchased it if it was available, but it wasn’t available. Then we had to figure out the rest of the characters.

For Will we thought he wouldn’t keep the Yoda ears on, so he was R2D2. Jim decided he wanted to be Obi Won over Han Solo. I didn’t really have a choice, since Jack hasn’t seen Episodes 1-3 he wouldn’t know Queen Amidala, so boysPrincess Leia it was. Mulligan was supposed to be C3PoochiO, but she got a reprieve since she is on bed rest.

I have been working on the costumes since the beginning of September. Jack has been asking to wear his for weeks, but I wanted to keep it nice until Friday. He has wore the cape everyday since then.

r2d2Sunday night we trick or treated through our neighborhood, this time actually going to the street behind us too. Will pretty quickly figured out what to do. Although he couldn’t say “Trick or Treat,” he did say thank you. Jack would have liked to run up ahead with the big group of kids, but being the mean parents we are we wanted him to stay with his brother. I am pretty sure he still had fun.

We now have so much candy in our house that I don’t know what to do with it all. It is going to take a long time for them to get through it at one piece a day. Well, Jim and I will probably help out with a few pieces.

Buzz and Woody’s Halloween

Buzz and Woody This year for Halloween Jack requested a Buzz Lightyear (from Toy Story) costume. So that determined our theme. Since Will doesn’t have an opinion yet he got to be Woody and we attempted to make Mulligan the Slinky Dog. Mulligan always dresses up too; she is a very good sport.

Once the costumes have been decided I get to work making them. This year wasn’t to hard. My sister helped me figure out how to make Buzz’s wings, the hardest part of the costume. Jack was very happy with the final product. Yes I did make the purple headsock too.

Buzz For Woody, I only had to make his cow print vest, bandana bib and belt buckle. I tried to find a plain yellow onesie to paint the stripes on, but couldn’t so this was the closest I could get. The only things he didn’t have were cowboy boots and a hat, but he wouldn’t have kept them on anyway.

Mulligan’s costume proved to be the most difficult and ultimately unsuccessful (which is why there are no photos of her.) We attempted to wrap her with speaker cord and I made her long ears. Neither would stay in place, so we gave up. Next year her costume will be better.

I think next year we (Jim and I) will need to dress up too. I wanted to make us some costumes this year, but ran out of time. We didn’t have a party to attend, so it didn’t matter anyway.Buzz's back

We hit the neighborhood for Trick or Treating with our neighbors who have a son Jack’s age. All the neighbors look forward to seeing the boys and our street has just enough houses. The adults take their treats (adult beverages) and the kids get theirs as we go.

Happy Halloween! Hope you had a haunting good time.
