Little Sports Fans

When the calendar turns to September that means Husky season is here and most Saturdays are filled with football watching either at Husky Stadium or on TV. We have been lucky enough to be in a group of season ticket-holders with our good friends Dana and Alan for the last nine years.

The boys have been going to games since they were months old, although I have my rules — no night games and no rainy games (because we have our fair share of those in Seattle.) Jim has proudly taught the boys the phrases “go Dawgs! Woof! Woof! Woof!” and “go Huskies!” and get them revved up for games with YouTube videos and GoBlawgs.com posts.

As infants, the boys just slept through most of the games or were happy being held. Once they could move around it became more difficult to keep them entertained for four quarters. And two-year-olds are a whole different story — wiggly, opinionated and right where Will is now.

It takes a backpack full of toys, books, food, and a row of empty seats to keep Will happy at the game. Luckily Husky stadium hasn’t been completely full and the bottom five rows of our section are usually unoccupied. Right now, our strategy is to head down to the open rows where we have more room and everyone has a better time. Unfortunately this is at the expense of spending time with the rest of our group but necessary right now, knowing that it won’t always be this way as the boys grow. Will plays cars and action figures for a while, and then trades them in for a snack and some books.

At halftime we usually try to head out to the Zone, a great tailgating area right behind the stadium. The boys can move around some more and Jim and I can get a beer. During the second half, both boys get to watch/play iPods. This way Jim and I actually get to enjoy the rest of the game.

If it happens to be an afternoon game and Will decides he wants to take a nap, I put him in the Ergo and walk back to the car or just around to get him some shut eye.

This is our sophisticated and time-tested strategy for how we make football games work with a six year old and a two year old. We work hard at it because he boys love going to games and it is good quality family time. Do you take your kids to sporting events?

Our Summer Soundtrack

The boys love music and dancing, as evidenced by Jack’s birthday party theme and dance videos I have posted. Since Jack got his iPod last Christmas they usually have something playing all the time. Jack and Will pick and choose the songs, often listening to the same ones over and over again.

Unfortunately in my car I am not able to connect my iPod and choose the songs (Jim’s car is new and came with iPod hook up,) so we have to go totally old school and listen to the radio. Every once in a while I will burn a CD of with some fun songs, just in case we need a change. The boys don’t quite understand that you can’t just tell the radio which song you want and have it play the request.

Will has started to request certain songs and when he hears one in the car he likes, it is common to hear “turn up.” I have also heard “new song,” when it isn’t one he likes. Thanks to Jim and me, they have an eclectic taste in music — from Linkin Park and Alice in Chains to Britney Spears and Katy Perry.

Their current favorite list includes:

  1. Linkin Park “New Divide” – from the 1st Transformers movie
  2. LMFAO “Party Rock Anthem” – this always gets a “turn up” from the back seat
  3. Britney Spears “I Wanna Go”
  4. Gorillaz “Feel Good Inc.” – Jack loves the laugh
  5. Gym Class Heroes “Stereo Hearts” (featuring Adam Levine)

Mom’s new tools

Top 5 new tools that makes my life easier as a Mom.

1. iPod – We gave Jack an iPod touch for Christmas. It is great, because it holds his music, movies and games all in one device and is very portable. The boys love to play music in their playroom on his iHome. Will likes to watch movies on my iPod nano.

2. Portable DVD player – Until the iPods and even for Will on the airplane and on a road trip this is a life saver. Over the weekend we were stuck in traffic for 2 hours and he happily watch movies the whole time. We also take it restaurants and after they eat their dinner they can watch a movie. It allows us to enjoy a nice meal.

3. Ergo – Again I didn’t have this with Jack, but got it with Will. It is a soft carrier that you can use to carry them on your front, back or side. When he was small he would sleep through Husky games in it on my chest. I still use it for him. He rode it this weekend actually.

4. Exersaucer – I didn’t use one with Jack, but with Will it was amazing. He used to sit and play while I could get dinner made. He thought it was great.

5. Bumbo seat – This molded seat allows babies to sit up before their tummy muscles are strong enough. Will would sit with us at the dinner table.
